1. Installation Instructions

This disk contains the Network Utilities for PCs and PC
compatibles. These include

	a. The Print Server Management Access Program
(MAP) which works on Novell NetWare networks.

	b. The BootP Lite program (Bootpl.exe) which
allows the user to set the IP address from
the ethernet hardware address using Windows
            for Workgroups 3.11.

	c. The NT BootP program (Ntbootp.exe) which
allows the user to set the IP address from
the ethernet hardware address using Windows
            95 and Windows NT 4.0.

        d. The Management Information Base (MIB) file
(SS1260.MIB) for use with Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP) over IP and IPX.

To install the MAP utility on your Windows 95 or NT 4.0
workstation, run the Setup.exe program on this disk from
your Windows 95 or NT 4.0 Start menu.

To install the MAP utility on your Windows for Workgroups
workstation, run the Setup.exe program on this disk from
your Windows for Workgroups Program Manager, by selecting
'File', 'Run', and then 'Browse' the a: drive to select
the Setup.exe program.

To remove the MAP utility from your Windows 95 or NT 4.0
workstation, run the Uninstal.exe program on this disk
from your Windows 95 or NT 4.0 Start menu.

To remove the MAP utility from your Windows for Workgroups
workstation, run the Uninstal.exe program on this disk from
your Windows for Workgroups Program Manager, by selecting
'File', 'Run', and then 'Browse' the a: drive to select
the Uninstal.exe program.

To assign the IP address using BootP on Windows for
Workgroups 3.11, you must run the Bootpl.exe program
on this disk from the Program Manager.

	a. From 'Program Manager', 'File', 'Run'
            Bootpl.exe.

	b. Pull down the 'Admin' menu to the 'Configure'
            option.

	c. Enter the IP address that you want to assign
to the 1260 Printer, its Subnet Mask (make
sure it matches what you are using on your
subnet), the Default Gateway (your router's
IP address), and its Hardware Address (listed
as Network address on the second line of your
NIC Status Page. Be sure to use colons instead
            of hyphens.

	d. Click on 'Go'. You will get a message that the
program is 'Verifying', and then it will tell
you whether the unit is active or not.

        e. Wait approximately two minutes while your printer
resets itself and prints a NIC Status Page with
            the new settings.

        f. Troubleshooting: Try to ping the printer through
its newly-assigned IP address. If it does not
respond (you get a time-out response), then check
your cables, verify that TCP/IP is enabled on the
NIC Status Page, and make sure that there is no
IP Protocol Address on your NIC Status Page,
then repeat this set of instructions.

To assign the IP address using BootP on Windows 95 or
Windows NT 4.0, you must run the Ntbootp.exe program
on this disk from the Start Menu.

	a. From the 'Start Menu', 'Run' Ntbootp.exe.

	b. Pull down the 'Admin' menu to the 'Configure'
            option.

	c. Enter the IP address that you want to assign
to the 1260 Printer, its Subnet Mask (make
sure it matches what you are using on your
subnet), the Default Gateway (your router's
IP address), and its Hardware Address (listed
as Network address on the second line of your
NIC Status Page. Be sure to use colons instead
            of hyphens.

	d. Click on 'Go'.

        e. Wait approximately two minutes while your printer
resets itself and prints a NIC Status Page with
            the new settings.

        f. Pull down the 'Admin' menu to 'Verify', you should
get a message back stating that 'The Unit is
Active'. If you do not get this message,, then
check your cables, verify that TCP/IP is enabled
on the NIC Status Page, and make sure that there
is no IP Protocol Address on your NIC Status Page,
then repeat this set of instructions.

NEC's proprietary MIB allows SNMP network management
software to communicate over IP or IPX to carry out
printer management tasks. The printer also supports
SNMP over MIB-II. To use the NEC proprietary MIB,

            1. Compile the NEC MIB file.

            2. Select the MIB under the private object
                in the hierarchical object identifier
                tree.

2. Known Anomalies and Incompatibilities

The MAP utility program works only on a Novell NetWare
network. Network printer management and status/alarm
reporting can be accomplished on other types of networks
using TCP/IP and a standard web browser (such as Netscape
Navigator or Microsoft's Internet Explorer).

Before one can use a standard web browser to manage the
network printer, the printer NIC must be assigned an IP
address using ARP or one of the BootP programs on this
disk. To assign the IP address using BootP on Windows
for Workgroups 3.11, you must run the Bootpl.exe program
on this disk. To assign the IP address using BootP on
Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, you must run the Ntbootp.exe
program on this disk.

Notes on using the NEC proprietary MIB: In order for
read-write objects to work, you must first make sure that
the community is set to private from public. Also, please
note that the Trap function is not supported.
