Frequently Asked QuestionsQuestion
What is the MobilePro 780 and 880 Service Pack 1?
Answer
NEC Computers has developed a service pack to address several service issues with MobilePro 780 and 880 handheld personal computers.
To assure proper operation, NEC Computers strongly recommends that you update your MobilePro 780 and 880 systems immediately by installing this service pack according to the installation instructions.
First download the service pack (MP78_UPDATE.CAB) to either your HOST or MobilePro system. It must be manually loaded onto your MobilePro by either using a dial up connection, PCMCIA Flash card, or from a connected PC before continuing with the installation.
To install the MP78_UPDATE.CAB file, follow these steps:
Back up your MobilePro data and configuration using the Microsoft ActiveSync backup procedure. For details on using ActiveSync, see your MobilePro User's Guide.
Perform a Full (hard) reset on your MobilePro.
Caution: Performing a Full reset erases all your data. Your MobilePro resets to the factory default settings. Please perform the backup first or you will lose data!
Copy the MP78_UPDATE.CAB file to you MobilePro desktop.
Install the service pack by double tapping the MP78_UPDATE ICON with your stylus. For proper installation, you MUST accept the default location - \Program Files, by clicking OK.
The following Message box will be displayed:
Warning !!!
In order to ensure these patches are properly installed you must perform a Hard Reset prior to the installation.
You must back up all application and data files before performing a Hard Reset.
The Hard Reset WILL ERASE all applications and data stored on this Mobile Device.
This file must be installed immediately after performing a Hard Reset on the Mobile Device (before any applications are reinstalled).
Press CANCEL to exit. Or Press CONTINUE to install this file.
Press Continue to install the service pack or Cancel to back up your data.
When the Setup Finish message box is displayed, Click Ok. This will remove all temporary files from your systems.
When the Setup Complete message box is displayed, click Ok.
Perform a Soft reset on your MobilePro.
Optionally, restore your MobilePro data using the ActiveSync restore procedure.
Once the service pack is installed, NECC recommends that you use the ActiveSync backup procedure to again back-up your system. This time your backup will include the service pack so you can restore both your data and the service pack should either ever be erased.
This service pack installs updates to the following built-in MobilePro drivers:
SaveRam driver. This update corrects a memory input/output problem that writes invalid data into certain memory ranges any time the MobilePro is turned on, or any time a soft reset is performed. This driver has previously been publicly distributed as a separate file and there are no important changes from the previous version. For further details about this issue please see the FAQ.
Display driver. The display driver is updated to address a problem where lines and characters may be incorrectly displayed in MobilePro FAX or the Microsoft RDP client.
IrMAC driver. Updated to address a problem receiving data with packet sizes of 2049 or 2050.
PCMCIA card driver. This simple update allows MobilePro to recognize an NEC modem.
Keyboard driver. Prevents a condition where MobilePro can lock up during either a full or soft reset.
Audio driver. Mutes the internal speaker after the modem connects.
Modem driver. The modem driver update modifies internal settings to improve reliability when connected through certain types of telephone switchboards.
StartUI. This driver eliminates a memory leak that reduces user resources.
Bitmap files. Replaces an incorrectly sized bitmap file that can cause the unit to lock up if either “the power on password” or “Display Owner Notes features” are enabled for use.
NOTE: NEC Computers strongly recommends that you update your MobilePro 780 and 880 systems immediately by installing the service pack according to the installation instructions.
NOTE: During Installation of this service pack, you must accept the default installation directory or the service pack will not be effective!
For assistance or further information, please call Technical Support at 800-632-4525.
This service pack should be installed on all MobilePro 780 and MobilePro 880.
What are the symptoms of the memory I/O problem?
It is not possible to predict all symptoms because you may have unique data or software on your MobilePro, however, you risk loosing data or experiencing system lockup or communications problems unless this service pack is installed. If your MobilePro has been operating abnormally, this service pack may be the solution.
Under what circumstances will I encounter the memory I/O problem?
The problem may occur any time the MobilePro is turned off with the Power key, any time the MobilePro case is closed, or any time a Soft reset is performed.
What will happen to my data if I don’t install the service pack?
Due to the memory I/O problem, data and program memory can become corrupt.
To ensure proper operation, NECC recommends that customers immediately install the service pack as described above.
How can I tell if I need to install the service pack?
If you have a MobilePro 780 or 880, you need to install the service pack.
Where do I get the service pack?
Customers may download the service pack from the Internet or phone NEC Computers at 888-632-8701 to request a copy on CD-ROM.
Are there any limitations to the service pack?
Once installed, this service pack resides in MobilePro memory. If both the main and backup batteries become exhausted, MobilePro memory may be erased. If this happens, all your data would also be lost, so it is important to follow backup procedures on a regular basis.
How can I prevent loss of the service pack in the event my MobilePro gets reset?
Make a backup after installing the service pack. It is always a good idea to keep backups of your important data and configuration settings. You may use either the ActiveSync backup procedure or the included bSQUARE® bUSEFUL™ Backup Plus software.
If you use Backup Plus, be sure at a minimum to save the registry settings and the entire contents of the \Windows folder. For details on using bSQUARE bUSEFUL Backup Plus, start the program (it’s on your MobilePro desktop) and follow the on-screen instructions. Be sure to transfer any backup files you create with Backup Plus to a different location, such as a different computer or a CompactFlash™ memory card, for safekeeping.
What happens if I run the service pack a second time?
Nothing, the user is informed that the service pack has already been installed.
