The current version of Iometer is 1998.10.08.

-------------------------------------------------------
Changes from version 1998.10.02 to version 1998.10.08:
-------------------------------------------------------

 * Fixed a bug that caused the Linear/Exponential stepping controls on
the Test Setup page to be ignored.

 * Fixed a bug that caused the stepping controls on the Test Setup page
to be improperly labeled and/or enabled after loading an .icf file.

 * Fixed a bug that caused preparation of logical disks to fail under
   Windows NT 5.0 Beta 2.

 * Added more information to error messages produced when I/O fails to a
   Disk or VI target.

-------------------------------------------------------
Changes from version 1998.09.25 to version 1998.10.02:
-------------------------------------------------------

 * Fixed a bug that caused the specified Maximum Disk Size and Starting
   Disk Sector to be ignored.

 * Added support for the environment variables VINIC0, VINIC1, etc. to
specify the names of VI NICs if they are nonstandard.

-------------------------------------------------------
Changes from version 1998.09.01 to version 1998.09.25:
-------------------------------------------------------

 * Added Solaris version of Dynamo (Intel Architecture only, not SPARC).

 * Redesigned the Presentation Meter dialog to greatly reduce its CPU
usage. Also changed the high-water mark to a high-and-low-water
   mark.

 * Fixed a bug that caused the # Outstanding I/Os from the Disk Targets
panel to be recorded in the results file for every test, even when
the test type was "Cycle # Outstanding I/Os".

 * Fixed a bug that caused PHYSICALDRIVE:0 not to appear even if it was
   empty.

 * Fixed a bug that made it impossible for Iometer to launch Dynamo if
Iometer was launched from a shortcut.

 * Fixed a bug that made it impossible for Iometer to launch Dynamo if
any directory in Iometer's path had a space in its name.

 * Fixed a bug in the Edit Access Specification dialog that caused
incorrect behavior if you pressed "Insert After" with multiple lines
   selected.

 * Fixed a bug that caused any Dynamo earlier than 1998.09.08 to hang on
login rather than being rejected as it should be.

 * Fixed a bug that caused non-running workers to affect the worker
configuration information (starting sector, disk size, etc.) recorded
   in the results file.

 * Added support for the Enter and Escape keys while editing the name of
   a manager or worker.

 * Fixed two memory leaks.

-------------------------------------------------------
Changes from version 1998.08.24 to version 1998.09.01:
-------------------------------------------------------

 * Fixed a bug that caused double-clicking on the Wrkload.icf file to
   not successfully launch Iometer.

 * Fixed a bug that caused loading a saved access spec to set the
default directory for the next attempt to launch Dynamo. Iometer now
always looks in the directory containing Iometer.exe for Dynamo.exe.

 * Fixed a bug that caused a deleted access spec not to be properly
removed from workers to which it had been assigned.

 * Fixed a bug that caused setting a worker's local network interface to
VI, if the worker did not have a VI target, to produce a message box
   indicating an invalid target index.

 * Fixed a bug that could cause errors if a disk had a non-standard
   sector size.

 * Fixed a bug that made an "Aborted test" message in a results.csv file
cause the Import Wizard to fail.

 * Suppressed the message "Performance counter percentage is out of
range" if the value is out of range by less than 0.1%.

 * Minor changes to improve the appearance and reduce the CPU
utilization of the Presentation Meter dialog. The CPU utilization
for each update is still quite high; to determine the actual CPU
utilization of your I/O, you should avoid use of the Presentation
Meter, or run Iometer on a different machine from Dynamo, or set the
   update frequency to "oo" (infinity).

-------------------------------------------------------
Changes from version 1998.08.01 to version 1998.08.24:
-------------------------------------------------------

 * Added support for testing of Virtual Interface Architecture
networking. VI testing requires an implementation that conforms to
revision 0.95 of the Intel Virtual Interface Architecture
   Implementation Guide.

 * Added support for multiple selection in the Edit Access Specification
dialog. You can now add and remove multiple access specs, but can
edit or change the order of one access spec at a time.

 * Added controls to the Results Display tab to pop up a dialog with a
   single large meter for presentations.

 * Changed default extension for setup files from .TXT to .ICF (Iometer
Configuration File) and added code to associate .ICF files with
Iometer. You can now double-click on an .ICF file, or specify an
.ICF or .TXT file on the Iometer command line, to launch Iometer and
load that file. Also fixed several bugs with loading setup files.

 * Changed default extension for results files from .TXT to .CSV (Comma
Separated Values), which are easier to import into Microsoft Excel.

 * Moved the identifying fields (such as Target Type and Target Name)
from the end of each results file line to the beginning. This will
make it less painful for users when additional results fields are
   added in the future.

 * Changed the results file so that the active access specs are saved
right before the related results instead of all access specs being
saved at the beginning of the test.

 * Fixed a bug in the Import Wizard that caused an overflow error when
importing a large file. Also improved support for multiple selection
when selecting the tests to import.

 * Fixed a bug that caused errors if the processor speed was not one of
   the expected values.

 * Fixed a bug that caused the input focus to get lost in the Access
Specifications tab, requiring repeated selections for repeated
actions or resulting in incorrect selection.

 * Fixed a bug that improperly removed assigned access specs from a
worker when a spec was removed from the global list.

------------------------------------------------------
Changes from version 1998.06.24 to version 1998.08.01:
------------------------------------------------------

 * Added connection rate testing. A "connection" consists
of opening a target, performing zero or more I/Os, and closing the
target. The average and maximum connection time and connections per
second are reported. This feature can be used with disk as well as
   network targets.

 * Added transaction testing (AKA "web transfer I/Os"). A "transaction"
consists of a request (read/write) followed by a reply (write/read)
of the same or a different size. The average and maximum transaction
time and transactions per second are reported. This feature replaces
the "Calculate Round-Trip Latency" check box in 1998.04.16, and can
be used with disk as well as network targets.

 * Added the ability to specify the alignment of each I/O on the disk.
The specified alignment must be a multiple of the disk sector size.
   (Ignored for network targets.)

 * Added separate toolbar buttons for New Manager, New Disk Worker, New
Network Worker, and Duplicate Worker. Added new fields to the Test
Setup tab to specify the default number of disk and network workers
to spawn with a new manager. Also reorganized the controls on the
Test Setup tab. Change in behavior: When you click the New Manager
button, the new manager spawns the number of disk and net workers
specified on the test setup page, but the New Worker buttons will
always spawn one worker, regardless of the settings in the Test Setup
tab. The Duplicate Worker button must be used to make a copy of a
   worker.

 * Made loading 1998.01.05-format access spec files work better.

 * Changed Results Display tab to use hierarchical pop-up menus rather
   than combo boxes.

 * Most of the controls in the Access Spec dialog are now dimmed if the
last access spec line is deleted.

 * Assigned Access Specifications are displayed for managers and All
Managers if all descended workers have the same access specification
list. The results file now shows the access spec name for managers
and All Managers if all workers are using the same access spec for a
   given test.

 * Fixed bug: When loading an old test setup file, if "Default Number
of Workers to Spawn" is specified to be 0, it is translated to "# of
   CPUs" instead of 0 workers.

 * Fixed bug: In some situations, when a worker was assigned the
Default spec and the Idle spec in the same test, it would repeat the
same test twice. Also, a test would hang if two separate managers
were assigned a different number of access specs. Also, if workers
on two different managers had a different number of access specs,
when the last test was running, the worker with fewer access specs
would still show an old result value.

 * Fixed bug: In order to prevent network workers from reporting a
read/write error while the test is completing, these errors are only
reported during the part of the test where results are recorded.

 * Fixed bug: Changing the selection in the access spec list with the
arrow keys, or pressing the mouse button on one line and releasing it
on another, did not update the other controls.

 * Fixed bug: Deleting a worker or a manager will now update the Target
Selection tab to reflect the newly selected worker or manager.

 * Fixed bug: The Results Display tab performance bars now scale
properly. The value 10.5 will now change the meter from 0-10 to
0-100; range comparisons formerly ignored the fractional part of the
   displayed value.

 * Fixed bug that caused Iometer to hang after disks were prepared.

 * Numerous code cleanups.

------------------------------------------------------
Changes from version 1998.06.15 to version 1998.06.24:
------------------------------------------------------

 * Fixed a bug that could allow a network client and server to get out
of sync with a complex access spec including bursts.

 * Added the TCP_NODELAY socket option to improve performance by
preventing data buffering during network transfers (replaces the
   SO_SNDBUF option used in 1998.06.15).

------------------------------------------------------
Changes from version 1998.04.16 to version 1998.06.15:
------------------------------------------------------

 * Greatly changed the Access Specifications tab. Access specifications
are now named, and different access specifications can be assigned to
each worker. The results.txt and setup.txt files and Import Wizard
have changed correspondingly. See the User's Guide for details.

 * Added "Network Packets per Second", "Packet Errors", and "TCP
Segments Retrans./Sec" to the results displayed in the Results
Display tab and stored in the results file. Note that network
performance results must be enabled; if the system is not properly
configured, these new results will always be zero. See the User's
Guide for information on properly configuring your system.

 * Transfer sizes can now be specified as any value from 1 byte to
1024MB, not just powers of 2 from 512 bytes to 1MB.

 * Added a version check to prevent different versions of Iometer and
   Dynamo from being used together.

 * Controls that do not apply are now grayed out. (Example: the "#
Outstanding I/Os" control on the Target Selection tab is now grayed
out if "Cycle # Outstanding I/Os" is selected in the Test Setup tab.)

 * Changed the default access spec from 512-byte random reads to 2K
random I/Os with a 2:1 ratio of reads to writes (formerly OLTP.txt).

 * Added support for testing of floppy disks. The list of disks now
includes floppy drives (A: and B:) if there is a floppy in the drive.

 * Added "CPU Effectiveness" (IOps / % CPU Utilization) to the results
displayed in the Results Display tab and stored in the results file.

 * Added FAQ.txt (Frequently Asked Questions) to the ZIP file.

 * Added a socket option to prevent the buffering of outbound network
   data (SO_SNDBUF).

 * Iometer and Dynamo now communicate using TCP/IP sockets instead of
named pipes. Named pipes are used as a fallback in case sockets are
   not available.

 * Fixed a bug that allowed results to update during the ramp-up period.

 * Fixed a bug that allowed the "# Outstanding I/Os" and "Burst Length"
   to be set to 0.

 * Fixed a bug that caused the IOps to be incorrectly increased if the
burst length was greater than 1.

 * Added support for any sector size (the code no longer assumes a
   512-byte sector size).

 * Made some changes to ensure correct operation under NT 5.0.

------------------------------------------------------
Changes from version 1998.04.02 to version 1998.04.16:
------------------------------------------------------

 * Fixed a bug that could cause the reported IOps value to drop to zero
   in some network tests.

 * Fixed a bug that would cause Iometer to hang if you deleted a network
client and ran the test without setting a new partner for the deleted
   client's server.

 * Fixed a bug that caused the error message "Net worker has no partner"
to appear if you had any idle network servers.

 * Fixed a bug that caused the error message "Expand() for manager
failed in CPageDisk::ShowTargets()" if there were no network
   interfaces for a manager.

 * Made "network client/server set to nothing" message appear even in
   non-DEBUG Dynamo.

------------------------------------------------------
Changes from version 1998.01.05 to version 1998.04.02:
------------------------------------------------------

 * Added the ability to test network as well as disk I/O. Changed
"disk" to "target" throughout the GUI. Updated documentation.

 * Added icons to the Topology panel and Target Selection tab.

 * Added the Iometer version number to the results file.

 * Increased the maximum length of the Test Description in a saved test
setup from 100 characters to 1024.

 * Updated the Import/Graph Wizard to understand network targets and
   version number.

 * Improved the order in which the <Tab> key moves the input focus
   between controls.

 * Improved enabling/disabling of controls. All controls are now
visibly grayed-out when they cannot be used.

 * Fixed a bug that sometimes caused Dynamo to print the message "Error
getting performance data" and not return some of the performance
data. Also made the error message more informative.

 * Fixed a bug that caused Iometer to crash if you made any change in
the Disk Selection panel and then pressed the "Disconnect Selected
   Worker or Manager" button.

 * Fixed a bug that caused the Load and Save buttons to be improperly
   enabled during a test.

 * Fixed a bug that caused an infinite loop of "unable to get subitem"
error dialogs if the last access spec line had a "% Access" of 0%.

 * Fixed a bug that caused the disks list not to be updated after disks
   were prepared.

 * Corrected some illustrations in the User's Guide that showed "Queue
Depth" instead of "# of Outstanding I/Os".

----------------------------------------------------
Changes from Galileo 12.11.97 to Iometer 1998.01.05:
----------------------------------------------------

 * Changed name from "Galileo" to "Iometer." Iometer is pronounced
"eye-OM-i-ter," to rhyme with "thermometer." The name is based on
"dynamometer", which is a device that measures the performance of an
engine under a controlled load; Iometer does the same for system I/O
performance. Also changed "Pulsar" to "Dynamo".

 * Changed version numbering system from <mm>.<dd>.<yy> to
<yyyy>.<mm>.<dd> to make it more obvious that it is a date and to
   prepare for the year 2000.

-----------------------------------------
Changes from version 10.2.97 to 12.11.97:
-----------------------------------------

 * Added revised license agreement. The new agreement no longer implies
that commercial use is prohibited, and allows use of Galileo results
in any way (including advertisements or marketing) by indemnifying
Intel from any harm resulting from such results.

 * Fixed bug: average values in ALL line in results file included
managers with no disks selected, even though their results were all
zero and were not displayed in the results file. Now Galileo is
smarter about determining when to include managers in the average,
and any manager that is included in the average is displayed even if
   its results are all zero.

 * Fixed bug: When using a cycling test type, the access spec LEDs
turned red after the first test. Now they stay green until all tests
for that access spec are complete.

 * Fixed bug: Selecting Exponential stepping with a start value other
   than 1 did not work properly (e.g. start = 16, end = 64, power = 2
   would run 16, 17, 19, 23, 31...). Now it works as expected (16, 32,
   64).

----------------------------------------
Changes from version 8.20.97 to 10.2.97:
----------------------------------------

 * Added the following new CPU utilization statistics: % User Time,
% Privileged Time, % DPC Time, and % Interrupt Time.

 * Divided the messages exchanged between Pulsar and Galileo into
separate data and instruction messages to reduce network traffic.
Also improved the code in some areas.

 * Added the Import/Graph Wizard.

----------------------------------------
Changes from version 7.22.97 to 8.20.97:
----------------------------------------

 * Removed the call to the "chkdsk" command after preparing each disk,
to avoid the annoying message "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume
is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume
to be checked the next time the system restarts?" This change means
that when a single disk drive is shared between two machines as a
logical drive, Pulsars running on the two machines will both prepare
the disk. This should have no effect on performance, but increases
the time it takes to prepare drives. Non-shared drives and shared
   physical drives are not affected.

 * Fixed a bug that caused Galileo to prepare only one worker per
manager, leaving the drives assigned to other workers unprepared.

 * Removed code for synchronous I/O, including the Transfer Type control
in the Disk Selection tab. Asynchronous I/O, which is more
efficient, is now used all the time.

 * Inactive (grayed-out) buttons on the toolbar now have ToolTips.

 * Added disclaimers and the "galileo@co.intel.com" address to the About
Box, and removed the Intel internal web address.

 * Added copyright statements to the code.

 * Numerous internal code changes to improve code maintainability and
readability and follow Windows recommended coding practices.

----------------------------------------
Changes from version 6.11.97 to 7.22.97:
----------------------------------------

 * Changed the size of writes used in disk preparation from 1MB to 64KB,
to work around a bug in NT under I2O.

 * Added end user license dialog, which appears when a new version of
Galileo is used for the first time. The license dialog is also
available from the About Galileo dialog.

 * Fixed loading of access specs to update the burst rate and delay
   time.

 * Centered the Galileo window in the screen upon loading.

 * Corrected problem with sequential file access if multiple sizes are
   included in an access specification.

 * Added extra code for divide by zero error checking in result
   reporting.

 * Clarified that the queue depth seen by the disks may be less than the
value specified by the Disk Queue Depth control if the I/O operations
   complete very quickly.

----------------------------------------
Changes from version 5.6.97 to 6.11.97:
----------------------------------------

 * The Workers panel has been renamed Topology and now includes "All
Managers" as the top of the hierarchy.

 * When a manager is selected in the Topology panel, the disks that you
select in the Disk Selection tab are distributed among the managers
workers instead of being selected in all workers.

 * To select a worker, manager, or "All Managers" for display in the
Results Display tab, you now simply drag the desired item from the
Topology panel to the desired chart.

 * The Load and Save buttons in the toolbar now load and save the
contents of the Test Setup tab as well as the Access Specifications
   tab.
