HP SureStore Ultrium support on Microsoft Windows NT

The HP SureStore Ultrium tape devices are designed for use in the high
performance server environment. In order to realise the full performance
of this tape drive it is necessary to use a third party backup application
and not the ntbackup applet supplied with the Windows NT operating system.
The Ultrium tape drives have a far higher performance than the ntbackup
utility, which can only supply data at 2 MB/s (without data compression). This
is insufficient to maintain the HP SureStore Ultrium drive in streaming
mode and will result in frequent stopping and repositioning of the tape.

The driver provided with this readme is for the Windows NT operating system,
but it is not the preferred solution due to the performance limitations stated
above. Hewlett-Packard referenced backup applications are listed on:
http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/index.html

In all cases first remove the native Windows NT driver or any other
Ultrium driver, before starting the installation of the HP Ultrium driver.

The following instructions are also valid to remove drivers, by
simply choosing the 'remove' option instead of the 'add' option.

Installing Windows NT 4.0 drivers
---------------------------------

1 Log on to Windows NT as Administrator, supplying the necessary
    	password.

2	Unzip the downloaded self extracting file containing the drivers
by double clicking the .exe file and save them to a known location.

3 Click on the 'Start' button, and then 'Settings' and 'Control
    	Panel'.

4 Double-click on the 'Tape Devices' icon.

5 The system will scan for attached tape drives and display a
message saying that a new SCSI device has been found. Click on
'Cancel' to proceed with installing the driver.

6 Click on the 'Drivers' tab, then on the 'Add' button and finally
    	on the 'Have Disk' button.

7 Depending on the state of your system, you may be prompted to
enter the path name for the driver, i.e. "C:\Temp\Drivers", or wherever
you have extracted the driver files to
The 'Install Driver' dialog box will show the tape driver.
   	Select it and click 'OK'.

8 You normally need to re-boot the system, unless the tape driver
is the first tape driver installed on your system. In this case,
the Tape Devices dialog box will display the "driver loaded"
message. Close this window. You should be able to use your new
    	tape drive.
