Flash Upgrade Applet for External Active Modem
----------------------------------------------

1. Installation
   No special installation step required. Just simply unzip the zip file into
   a folder you preferred (say c:\temp).

2. System Requirement
 * Windows 95 / NT 4.0
 * Connect the external RS232 modem (i.e. MC143450RDK) to a COM: port
   (COM1: - COM8:)

3. Starting the Program
 * Power on the modem, and execute the main program 'Flashup.exe' to start.
   Pls. close any other application program before upgrading the firmware.
 * The applet will automatically selected the COM: port with modem connected
   (COM1: to COM8:)
 * Once a valid COM: detected, it will collect the current default country code
   from the modem and also validating the 'AT I3' and 'AT I119' response for
   modem firmware verification
 * 'FlashUp' only recognize the modem with the 'AT I3' and 'AT I119' response
   matched with the expected values as specified in the 'FlashUp.dat' data
   file. If matched, you will see the firmware upgrade menu. Otherwise, the
   program will terminate.
 * Pls. provide the filename for the new firmware to be upgraded. You can
   select the desired firmware from a file dialog by clicking the '...' button
   to browse directory and locate the latest firmware file (.dlf)
 * Once the firmware filename is provided, you can click the 'Upgrade' button
   for flash memory upgrade

4. 'FlashUp.dat' data file
   In general, user will not need to modify the 'flashup.dat' file as it is
   dedicated for the MC143450RDK modem.

   The 'flashup.dat' should only be modified by the modem manufacturer if they
   have tailor-made a new set of 'AT I3' and/or 'AT I119' response for their
   50RDK-based modem in the new firmware.

   A general 'flashup.dat' file is shown below:

;
; FlashUp Data File
;
Check length for ATI3 response = 8
Expected ATI3 response = "MC143450 Modem"
;
Check length for ATI119 response = 3
Expected ATI119 response = "Motorola"

    It contains 4 lines (any line starting with semi-colon ';' treats as a
    remark and will be ignored) and is self-explained.

    'Check length' means how many characters should the program need to check
    from left to right between the received response from modem and the
    expected response.

    For example, 'Check length for ATI119 response = 3' means only 3 characters
    need to be compared (i.e. only "Mot" part will be checked)

    Note that if 'Check length' = 0 means 'no need to compare'. For example, if
    the firmware does not provide 'AT I119' response, you may set 'Check length
    for ATI119 response = 0' to bypass comparison.

5. Notes when using Windows 98
   When running 'FlashUp' under Windows 98, you may encounter the "Error
   writing to modem! Error code 1121" warning message.

   Pls. ignore this warning and click 'OK' to continue whenever you get this
   system message. It is only a warning and should be okay.

   In fact, this message is referred to 'A serial I/O operation completed
   because the time-out period expired.' when running 'Flashup' in Windows 98.

   It would not have such message when running 'FlashUp' under Windows 95 or
   NT 4.0.
